Common Referral Questions
When should a patient with gallstones be referred?
Patients with symptomatic gallstones (biliary colic, cholecystitis, gallstone pancreatitis, or bile duct stones) should be referred for surgical assessment. Incidentally found gallbladder polyps ≥1cm or growing polyps also warrant surgical review.
When should a pancreatic cyst be referred to a surgeon?
Any pancreatic cyst identified on imaging should be assessed by a specialist HPB surgeon. Cysts with worrying features — high-risk stigmata such as solid component, dilated main pancreatic duct, or rapid growth — require prompt evaluation.
When should a patient with pancreatic cancer be referred?
Urgent referral is recommended as soon as pancreatic cancer is suspected or confirmed. Early MDT review and surgical assessment are critical to determining resectability and treatment sequencing.
Which liver tumours require surgical referral?
Hepatocellular carcinoma, colorectal liver metastases, cholangiocarcinoma, and other primary or secondary liver malignancies should be referred to a liver surgeon for MDT assessment and consideration of resection.
