Complex Pancreatic & Liver Surgery in Western Sydney
Dr Chris Nahm consults and operates in Western Sydney, where Westmead Hospital serves as the region's major tertiary referral centre for patients from Westmead, Parramatta, Blacktown and across Greater Western Sydney. Westmead is one of only a small number of high-volume institutions in New South Wales equipped for complex pancreatic and liver surgery — and volume matters, because outcomes in major hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery are closely linked to how regularly a centre performs these operations.
As the principal tertiary referral hospital for the Western Sydney Local Health District, Westmead serves a large and growing catchment. Patients are commonly referred from Parramatta, Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Auburn, Merrylands, Wentworthville, Granville, Seven Hills and Castle Hill, along with the surrounding suburbs of Greater Western Sydney. For complex pancreatic and liver surgery, Westmead also receives referrals from well beyond its immediate district.
This level of care depends on infrastructure that few hospitals can provide. Westmead offers on-site intensive care, high-risk anaesthetic expertise, a 24-hour on-site surgical team, and round-the-clock access to emergency interventional radiology and gastroenterology — the services that make major resections safer and allow any complication to be managed promptly, at any hour of the day or night.
Complex cancer and liver surgery decisions are made collaboratively through Westmead's multidisciplinary team, which brings together surgeons, diagnostic and interventional radiologists, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. This means each patient's treatment plan reflects the combined expertise of the full cancer care team rather than a single specialty.
Westmead is one of the largest hospitals in Sydney and a major teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Sydney. As an academic surgeon, Dr Nahm leads an active pancreatic cancer research program alongside a clinical research program in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) — work directed at improving both long-term cancer outcomes and the speed and comfort of each patient's recovery.
Services provided in Western Sydney include pancreatic cancer, cyst and neuroendocrine tumour surgery; the Whipple procedure and other pancreatectomy; liver resection for tumours, metastases and cysts; bile duct and gallbladder surgery; and hernia repair.
Operating at Westmead Hospital, Westmead NSW 2145. Consultations are held at Dr Nahm's rooms at Norwest GI, Bella Vista — a short drive away.
