Liver Cysts

Expert evaluation and surgical management of simple liver cysts, hydatid disease and biliary cystadenoma.

Overview

Liver Cysts

Liver cysts are fluid-filled sacs within the liver. Most are benign and asymptomatic, discovered incidentally on imaging. However, some liver cysts require surgical treatment depending on their type, size, symptoms, and risk of complications.

Types of Liver Cysts

Simple Liver Cysts

The most common type — thin-walled, fluid-filled cavities. Most are benign and require no treatment. Large cysts causing symptoms may benefit from laparoscopic deroofing (fenestration).

Polycystic Liver Disease

Multiple liver cysts often associated with polycystic kidney disease. Symptomatic cases with massive enlargement may benefit from surgical fenestration or liver resection.

Hydatid Cysts

Caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus, hydatid cysts require surgical treatment with careful technique to avoid cyst spillage. Managed with pre-operative antiparasitic medication and surgical removal or deroofing.

Biliary Cystadenoma / Cystadenocarcinoma

Rare cystic tumours lined by biliary-type epithelium with malignant potential. Surgical resection is recommended for all biliary cystadenomas.

Treatment

The management of liver cysts is highly individualised. Asymptomatic simple cysts typically require only surveillance imaging. Symptomatic or complicated cysts may be treated with laparoscopic deroofing, aspiration and sclerotherapy, or liver resection depending on the type and extent. Dr. Nahm will guide you through the most appropriate management for your individual case.
